On Friday evening Steyning Town welcomed Peacehaven and Telscombe to the "Birchwood Ground" for the first game in a full weekend of fixtures. With both teams in good form, an exciting game was expected. In a high tempo physical game, both teams had chances but were denied by the woodwork and the lack of the final scoring touch. But Steyning Town struck first when captain Jack Barnes picked-up a loose mid-field pass and fired a low rasping shot into the goal from just outside the penalty box. He then earned himself ten minutes in the sin-bin for his constant questioning of the referee's decisions - the home side were ten men for ten minutes. Despite the visitors having the majority of chances in the first half, they were still losing at halftime but it was an exciting half of football for the large number of spectators. In the second half, captain Ross Barclay scored the equaliser after a cracking run to finish with a strike across the goalkeeper into the back of the goal. Peacehaven and Telscombe were applying all the pressure but the "Barrowmen" were holding firm. The situation got worse for the visitors very near the final whistle, when their goalkeeper Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke was sent off for a totally needless act of violent conduct perceived by the referee against a home side forward. Harry Docherty stepped up to wear the gloves and kept a clean sheet as the game came to an end with a 1-1 scoreline and a point to both teams which moved Steyning to the top of the division but probably only for a short time, as Steyning Town are one of five clubs playing for the top spot..
